Heat-shrinkable materials are composed of two key components: an external backing that is extruded and cross-linked polyolefin, and an internal adhesive made from thermoplastic materials. The backing shrinks when exposed to heat, which creates circumferential compression that strengthens the bond between the sleeve and the pipe joint surface.
Heat-shrinkable sleeves are a robust type of field-joint coating system that provides excellent protection against damage. The coating system incorporates a combination of solvent-free, high-performance epoxy, adhesive-based copolymer, and modified cross-linked polyethylene. This unique blend is designed to mimic the structure and performance of three-layer polyethylene coatings applied in a factory setting.
The coatings on heat-shrinkable sleeves are compatible with all commonly used pipe coatings, including polyethylene, coal tar enamel, and fusion-bonded epoxy. This means that the sleeves can be used in a variety of environments and with different types of pipes, making them a versatile solution for a range of applications.

Before application, it is important to mix the two components of the epoxy primer thoroughly to ensure proper bonding. The coating should be applied to a minimum thickness of 150 µm and cover at least 10 mm of the surrounding area.
It is recommended that users only mix as much primer as can be applied during the pot life to avoid waste.
While the epoxy is still wet, the sleeve should be applied. The adhesive used for the sleeve should be heated before application. After wrapping the sleeve, the closure patch must be heated and applied. The entire sleeve should be heat-shrunk to tightly fit around the joint.
If necessary, post heating can be used to soften the sleeve and remove any trapped air.
