Heat-shrinkable materials are composed of an external backing that is extruded and cross-linked from polyolefin. The internal adhesive is made up of thermoplastic materials. The shrinkage of the backing creates a level of circumferential compression in the coating that supplements the bonding of the sleeve to the pipe joint surface.
Heat-shrinkable sleeves are a field-joint coating system, designed to be one of the toughest coating systems available on the market. The coating system consists of a solvent-free, high-performance epoxy, an adhesive base copolymer, and modified cross-linked polyethylene. This design was made to replicate the structure and meet the performance of mil-applied three-layer PE coatings. These coatings are compatible with all commonly used pipe coatings, including polyethylene, coal tar enamel, and fusion-bonded epoxy.
The multi-functional adhesive is excellent and most capable of allowing lower installation in pre-heat temperature. The adhesive offers bonding to a variety of surfaces such as 3LPE, DFBE, FBE, and CTE, which makes it quite versatile.
Additionally, this adhesive offers full resistance to shear forces induced by soil and thermal movements, making it highly durable. Furthermore, it boasts of superior cathodic disbondment, hot water immersion resistance, and thermal ageing resistance. These remarkable features ensure that the adhesive offers long-term protection against corrosion, making it a highly effective solution.
Utilizing this adhesive can result in a reduction in time and cost. Its ability to bond to multiple surfaces and the fact that it allows lower pre-heat temperature make it an efficient option. It's also important to note that the adhesive can be applied with a wet epoxy primer, which further reduces its installation cost and time.

Before application of the epoxy primer, make sure to mix both components thoroughly. It is important to ensure that the mixing is complete in order to achieve the desired results. Apply the epoxy primer to a minimum thickness of 150 µm and cover at least 10 mm of the adjacent coating. It is advisable to avoid mixing more primer than can be used during the pot life.
Apply the sleeve while the epoxy is still wet. Prior to application, heat the adhesive. Once the sleeve is wrapped, the closure patch must be heated and applied. The entire sleeve should be heat-shrunk to perfectly fit around the joint. Post-heating is necessary in order to soften the sleeve and remove any trapped air.
