Heat-shrinkable materials are composed of an external backing made of extruded and cross-linked polyolefin, and an internal adhesive made of thermoplastic materials. The backing shrinks upon heating, which creates a level of circumferential compression in the coating. This compression supplements the bonding of the sleeve to the surface of pipe joints.
Heat-shrinkable sleeves are a type of field-joint coating system that is known to be one of the toughest coating systems available. This coating system consists of solvent-free, high-performance epoxy, an adhesive base copolymer, and modified cross-linked polyethylene. The design of this coating system is meant to replicate the structure of and meet the performance standards of mil-applied three-layer PE coatings. These coatings are compatible with all commonly used pipe coatings, including polyethylene, coal tar enamel, and fusion-bonded epoxy.

This adhesive is excellent as it has many functions such as allowing for lower installation temperature during the pre-heat stage of bonding, and bonding to a variety of surfaces such as 3LPE, DFBE, FBE and CTE.
It is also highly resistant to shear forces caused by soil and thermal movements providing assurance for optimal bond retention.
What's more, this adhesive offers superior cathodic disbondment, hot water immersion resistance and Thermal ageing resistance giving the ultimate, long-lasting protection against corrosion.
In addition to its exceptional resistance properties, this adhesive can significantly reduce time and costs through its ability to bond at lower pre-heat temperatures and the use of a wet epoxy primer application.
For additional detail, please refer to the instructions for use.
To begin, mix the two components of the epoxy primer thoroughly before application. It is important that the mixture is well combined to ensure proper adhesion. Apply the primer to a minimum thickness of 150 µm, covering at least 10mm of the adjacent coating.
Remember not to mix more primer than can be applied during the pot life. Always follow the recommended guidelines for application to avoid waste or improper coverage.
Once the epoxy is applied and still wet, it's time to apply the sleeve. Before application, ensure that the adhesive is heated. Once applied, the closure patch must be heated and applied to secure the sleeve in place. The entire sleeve should be heat-shrunk to fit tightly around the joint.
After application, post heating is used to soften the sleeve. This process allows for the removal of any trapped air for optimal performance and longevity.
